Any campers out there?

Hubby has decided to go and buy a tent as the kids have been nagging to go camping since we arrived here. They all enjoyed sleeping out when we did the relay for life and didn't mind the cold one bit so we are running out of excuses. You would think that living in our house was as close to camping as most people would want to get  .
So advice please from anyone who has been out camping in the national parks. Ours is just 5 mins up the road and we are allowed to camp there so it seemed a good place to start. I have been told that you can camp within a certain distance of the river without any problems BUT my big worry is that at the moment we are starting snake season again. We have got several brown, black and tiger snakes in the area (one large black one was festering in our well last year :barf: ). We have been told that black and brown snakes are usually OK and will avoid people but that tiger snakes may well have a go and that they like water. I am not overly worried but would like to know if anyoen here has been camping and can give us some pointers on what we should or shouldn't do.
I expect the possums will be more of a pain if the one in our roof is anything to go by
Thanks.

Buy a tent first :P

Seriously buy a tent and a tarp that is larger than your tent. Put your tent up and the tarp over the top allowing some of the tarp to be used as part of the shaded area to sit around during the day.

Most tents are snake proof so it's a matter of what you have outside your tent that will attract the native creatures. Food goes without explanation put it into something such as a large eksy or plastic containers.

Don't put your tent up under trees as you may find ants a problem or in the worse case of a storm something falling on your tent.

Take a shovel with you as this can be helpful for digging out the bush toilet unless they have some already there, digging a trench around your tent if there is a bit of a storm and smacking over the head of snakes if they appear

Throw away your rubbish as much as you can to clear your camp away. Keep it clean as you won't attract little critters so much then.

Also you can ring up the ranger and see if there is anything they suggest and if there has been a lot of sightings of snakes in the area if that is your main worry.

Otherwise just enjoy it and go for it.

My advice? Don't do it. Find a nice cabin with running water, proper beds and all mod cons. I like to think we have evolved further than cave dwellers

Let the kids and dad camp out, while you are pampered in a local health spa :P
My kids are desperate to camp out after camping for the weekend in the summer hols. Where im more like MP would rather have a long cabin and pampering
