We've just had a phone call from our son Carl (from Terry's first marriage) to say that he and his girlfriend are getting married in August and will Terry be able to make it over there for the wedding.

Apart from the fact that we are totally skint, Terry has always said that he never wants to go back to the UK. But I'm wondering.... should I try and save like billyo or rob a bank so that I can surprise Terry with a ticket for him to go back for the wedding? defintely could not afford for more than one of us to go. And they do of course also have our grandaughter out there that we've never seen.

Bugger it. Don't know what to do :dunno:

I think you have to subtly weedle out of him if his desire not to go is a real desire not to go or one born out of lack of funds, time and feeling bad about him going and you not. You know the sort of thing....... have conversations like "if we win the 19million lottery on saturday would you go to the wedding or would you whisk me away somewhere exotic instead" and make comments along the lines of it would be so good to go and see your new grand daughter too, you know blokes Anne they don't know what they want until we've planted that seed, nurtured it and allowed it to bloom..... sorry blokes

Personally I'm not looking at it from Terrys point of view but Carls. I'm sure he'd love his dad to be there  It's not really 'going back to the UK' but more like attending a wedding & seeing a grandchild

That's more along the lines of what I'm thinking.

Though I might ring them today before Terry gets home and let them know that although Dad will say we've got no money, I am going to try my utmost to save. I think Terry might secretly like to nip over for a week just to be able to attend the wedding if he wasn't so worried about the money and the business. He now has a manager in the office so perhaps nearer the time I'll ask him on a quiet basis if he thinks he can run things and that they can cope without Terry for a week. After all if Terry was sick he could be off for a week.

Yeah, shut yer face Debs

The location is neither here nor there, its the occasion thats of the importance. As a young adult I'd be totally gutted if my Dad didn't attend my wedding (which actually I was, but a rotting corpse would have been a bit off putting for the other guests )

But as Lynn says, these blokes sometimes need to have a wee think
