We have had a problem with our water for a while now it started to smell and is pretty unpleasant so Ian got it checked. Apparently it is off the scale for generall crappy things that can make you very sick and also has some ecoli and some other nasties in it just for good measure. SO we decided to check out the well and discovered that it isn't a bore hole but rather a 1.25 M wide brick lined well. Ian decided that as it is 10 m deep he would probably have difficulties getting a ladder down there so he lowered down a light and a video camera. When we checked the footage it appears that we have a festering snake down there (it appears to be about 1m long or more and is floating in the water, possibly attached to the pump draw pipe
:o . So we called the plumber down the road for any ideas on what to do next and he is coming over tomorrow morning with his fishing rod to try to fish it out  . I will make sure that I update you all along with all of the gory details photographed if available. The next plan is to lower the kids down with nets to fish it out :P but they don't seem all that keen. The joys of living in the country. Nicky. |

OK so the local plumber has managed to fish out a festering 1-2 m long black snake out of our well. We are now trying to pump out the water so that we can clean it out and start to use the well again. We are getting a filter installed later this week so that we won't have to worry in the future even though the well is usually very pure. The snake is in several plastic bags and in the bin as we speak. I will post a photo later today. Nicky |

Actually he thought it was great fun and didn't charge us. He said that he can add it to his list of catches
 as he is an avid fisherman. Nicky |

Nope snake is now safely in our bin inside several plastic bags as it stunk to high heaven. We have now got the well drained and are able to use the water for washing etc again as the smell has all gone so I am a happy bunny. We had a bit of a nightmare when the pump wouldn't work but after a bit of research we worked out how to prime it again and all seems fine. We are still getting a filter this week so that we can drink the water without having to think about rotting snake. In the meantime we will carry on drinking from the rainwater tank through our tabletop filter. We still have the video footage for posterity :P . The locals here are great when it comes to helping out so now we have to work out how to say thanks as he refused to take any money. Me thinks that it will be time to get some beers in. Nicky |

A carton of beers always go down well (excuse the pun ) or maybe he could keep the festering snake as fish bait! |

So where's the pictures then Nicky?
 actually thinking about I'm not sure I want to see a picture of a festering snake. Do you drink from your rain water tank then as opposed to the well? How fantastic that you have your own little well throw a coin in it for me ;) |

Nicky, sounds ace
 Its one of my fears, having my water tanks succumb to something terrible! We have filters through the "in" pipes and one of those filters for drinking water on the sink. I'm very paranoid and won't even have a swig of water from any other tap in the house. Touch wood, no nasties yet :yu: |

Right I have loaded a piccie into photobucket but have no idea how to put it here. So if you are interested then check out my folder for dead snake piccie. We are planning on getting the top of the well finished off and sealed when we get the work done on the house so hopefully we won't have the poblem again. |

That was one of my mian arguments against going for a five acre block, having to have water tanks, i'd have ben paranoid about running out or something finding its way in there. The fact we couldn't afford 5 acres is neither here nmor there of course  Nicky i don;t know what i find more worrying..... the fact that it had been down there long enough to get into that oozing state or the fact that it's mates are probably still looking for it :o Do you know what kind it was before it became a puss oozer? |

Running out isn't to big a drama, you just get some delivered. Also theres no real way that things can get into tanks as they are sealed, its just whats in the drainpipes.............. |

It was a black snake so nice and poisonous but on the up side apparently they keep the other snakes out of your garden :o . The most worrying thing was that it had no head..... I am much less concerned about the bits that we found than I am about the bits that had disappeared into the water system at some earlier stage :barf: . Nicky |
