That day has arrived that us Mums have been dreaming of........ Back to school. Boys are happy with their teachers and all seems well. There is a note home today telling us that there is a newly enroled year 1 child who has a fish allergy and as a result all fish is banned from school. So off the school menu goes... sushi, tuna sandwiches and i suppose various other things which may contain traces of fish, all students and staff have also been banned from taking fish in to school, so no tuna sandwiches, salmon sandwiches etc.... Now i met the mother of the child concerned last week who told me she has moved to the catchment area for this school as it's the best one in the area for dealing with such allergies and she had "a 3 hour round the table conference" with the principal last friday "until her demand for a total fish ban" was met as her child only has to be in the same room as a fish to go into anaphalaxis(sp) (strangely though i met her at a small kiddies beach where all the kids were up to their knees in water with their fishing nets catching blowies). It must be a horrendous worry for a parent to have to hand a child with such an allergy over to other people to look after them, and it must be a huge responsibility for the teacher who has the child in their care. So..... my question really is..... the note says fish. fish products and anything which may contain traces of fish..... what else apart from fish contains traces of fish? |

No idea...food labels are getting better, but I think most of them are designed for food containing or prepared in the same room as nuts. Must be horrible for the mum though. I would always feel the need to explain why my childs allergies have to affect everyone. A childhood without Fish Fingers, unimaginable!!! :D |

If a kid was lactose intolerant (like me) - would the school ban milk, cheese and all dairy products from coming in????

That is a first for me that even the smell of something makes you have a fit???? Sounds a bit OTT but then I suppose you can't be too careful and if it was my child I would get it banned from the world
 I'm not too sure what else contains fish or fish products, I'll have to have a think on that one. |
