Water Melons

Our garden is a mess as when the pool was dug they piled all the soil and plants at one end, we cleared as much as we could but left some to be sorted out later when pool is finished.

A great big green leafy sprawling weed has been growing rapidly for weeks, and since we have come back from hols there is what looks like three water melons growing on it. I cut one off today and cut it open and it looks like a pale version of a shop bought water melon, so probably not ripe enough.

Anyway, I did not think water melons grew here, as never seen any (but actually have never really looked or thought about it), so does anyone else have watermelons growing wild in the suburbs of Brisbane

Post a photo. It's probably a rock melon. They grow all over the place here almost like weeds.

 at Bordy :P

Will take a pic tomorrow and post it in photobucket, as cant put pics on here

They definitely look like watermelons, dark green skin, with pale green/yellow stripes, and look like a watermelon on inside too, just a bit paler than shop bought ones.

I will get Shane to eat some first though, just to be sure they are safe for the rest of us

Watermelons do grow 'wild' here. Not so many years ago, many people grew them around the outer Brisbane areas and had a stall out the front selling them cheap. That's mostly further out of town now due to the urban sprawl.

I've also had pumpkins grow 'wild' in my garden. Actually, virtually anything which has been put into the compost bin will grow of its own accord, but especially the 'viny' type of plants. ;)
