working full time and childcare for 3 kids ...

since ive started back working im having real problems getting after school care for my 3 kids - managed to find a childminder who can do it for the short term, but no luck long term :(
im worried that this may happen in aus too ... the way things are going at the moment i just cant fit in more than 3 shifts a week what with mum (who isnt too good atm, ive got to cancel a shift this week to get her into an outpatient appt with the cardiologist - shes having problems so needs urgent review) and the kids et al ... so it looks like that temp visa is gonna be the only way to go. (see my sig!)
if mal is starting work early too am i going to have probs finding pre school care too? L is 10 and the boys 6 atm, so not really old enough to get themselves to school for a few more years ...
ive had a look on gumtree and the online ads in the aus papers, but there just doesnt seem to be any kind of pre/after school care advertsied; i know some schools do have afterschool care, but do many do early morning/walk to school type care?
still not sure on adelaide/brisbane but this is something that will be a deciding factor ....

any advice or expereinces/2nd hand experience gratefully accepted :D :flowers:

Most primary schools have before school care starting at 6.30am and after school care up to 6.00pm usually. The afterschool care is run by the local councils and not the schools, and kids need to be registered with the council to attend the out of ours care. My youngest is registered and goes on a casual basis and this has worked out really well for us.

Good luck with the temp visa, hope you get things sorted out really soon.

Loads of childcare here. The private school next door to the school I work at has a centre attached to it and they drop our kids off in the morning and collect them at the end of the day from our door.

looking at ens visa now, but still unsure due to childcare arrangements; the problem i have is with having 3 kids who will need care - school here has pre and after care but actually fitting 3 kids in is nigh on impossible :(

thanks for the replies :flowers:

I found that over here the before and after school care was a far better set up then back in the UK. It seems the norm here to send your kids to day care outside school hours. If the school doesn't have care there is often one close by, ours cost $12 per day per child but that is without any subsidy from the government which is all income based.

Sue this is a really cheeky question and i'm sure you've answered it before just i haven't noticed...... but you seem to be your Mums main support so how does that affect your plans?

Other than that, which is just me being plain nosey, don't worry about childcare, there is lots of it here, even the play centres offer before and after school care. You are looking for problems where there are none, now get that visa sorted or else when you get here you'll be whinging about the fact you should have done it years ago!!!!!!

pmsl ... we already know we should have done it years ago :D
yep, im my mums main (or is that only?) carer ... she isnt a well lady so is living on borrowed time, and has been for the last 18 months (shes one of those who will prove em all wrong and live to be 108) - if she is still with us next summer, my brother has told me to not put our plans on hold any longer and to go, he will look after her (hmmm .... :nah: ) we were initially about to embark on mals tra and visa application back in january 06, but the week after we told everyone mum had her stroke and was really ill for months (cue several midnight dashes to hospital!) when she was discharged 6 months later i had no option but to be the one to care for her (which brings me to my bitter state ... she never offered me any support throughout my life, but now she relies on me .... )

re the visa, well when we came for our holiday earlier this year we thought, yeah, sort out tra when we get back ... but by 1st sept tra have removed the pathway for on the job trained tradies ... which buggered us up as thats how mal learned his trade
so now we are on to my skills again ... but as i havent worked anywhere near full time for years is gonna be a bit of a long drawn out process - ive had to cancel tomorrows shift cos i have to take mum to see the doc (she is unwell again ...) and that shift would have taken me to 20+ hours this week, so that would have been 2 weeks down, 50 to go

so, looking at alternative options - one is the temp visa, but im wary of the pitfalls of that one so pondering ens ... but if mal is working too im worried there wont be any childcare (worries based on what i expereince here, and from reading how some nurses have had probs with childcare~) especially having 3 kids its sooo difficult to get em all in together ...

no you arent being nosy ... :kissed:

sooo sorry for the long winded reply btw ...

Sue, dont worry about the childcare, it is a lot easier here. You wont have a problem getting 3 kids into out of hours school care.

The other thing I find is that almost every hospital I have worked at here, do self rostering, so basically you pick the shifts you want to work. So if you live close to where you work, and do early shifts, you can still pick kids up from school, and if your husband is starting work later than you he can drop kids to school. It really wont be a major problem. You may not even need out of hours school care

Now go and get that application in!
