Baby sleep patterns...; HELP!

Katie has been so good, since she was 8wks old she has slept through the night no probs.

To start with we'd put her to bed about 10pm, she'd sleep til 7.30ish and gradually it went out to 8.30pm, and I started putting her to bed about 9.30.

Depending on her feeding pattern of the day (she is fed every four hours but depending when her first feed of the day was depended when that four hours fell) she would more often than not get a "top up" feed at bedtime.

Last couple of weeks she has been exhausted by 8pm so I've been putting her to bed then after a feed, usually a scheduled one as she seems to have been on an 8-12-4-8 routine for ages.

But the last two nights she has woken up screaming about 4am - and it's not crying it is actually screaming. First night was Saturday/Sunday and we thought maybe she'd got sunburnt but it wasnt the case (she'd had factor 30 and been in the shade anyway). Malc changed her and she went back to sleep. Today the same, only she woke again at just after 5 and in the end around 6 I had to feed her although she didnt drink a full bottle so wasnt starving. She has slept ever since (lucky thing!!)

Just wondered what all the experienced mums think:

should i try putting her to bed later again?

should i try and feed her a bit earlier each time during the day (say 3 1/2 hours apart instead of 4) so I can squeeze in a top up feed at bedtime at 8?

please help, cant live with sleep deprivation again and it's already causing arguments again... :(

Sorry I'm no help here. O has only once slept through till around 5am and that was on friday night. None of mine have slept through till around 12 months.

What i do know is that anything can change their sleep patterns, hunger, wind, too hot, too cold, growth spurt, over stimulation through the day, etc, etc, etc......

If she's not desperate for a bottle when she wakes then maybe try just comforting her till she falls asleep again so she doesn't become used to having a bottle as soon as she screams.

As for mine last night she went down at 8 was up at 11, 1ish around 3 then 6, in the middle of this Indie wet his bed (first time ever, he picks his moments :) ) and thats pretty much how it's been for the last couple of months.

Maybe someone else can offer you something more constructive, I'm too knackered :P

LOL

Thanks Lynn :flowers:

I am wondering is she has teeth coming as she has been drooling more than ever and really chewing her fingers rather than just sucking them...

Bridie I failed badly the 1st time around with my eldests sleeping pattern. 2nd time it went far better, I got her into a pattern of going to sleep at 7pm, gave her another top up feed at 11pm before I went to bed and she would sleep through until 7am....perfect.

At this point I must add that no one baby is the same and you will find that she will have her own sleeping pattern. As for the screaming it could be her teeth, a night terror or just a surprised waking at night that has scared her.

I'm gonna sound really sarky here, but, poor you! TWO NIGHTS!!! Is that ALL!? Try A YEAR then i'll feel sorry for you :P

Its probably her teeth, if shes screaming its pain. Try bongella and some panadol. And i agree with Lynn, don't offer the bottle otherwise she'll get used to it.

OOh also how old is she? Has she started solids yet?

 you lot

 to you all!!

Sorry, wasnt looking for sympathy just answers.... although I am now 80% sure it is teeth coming. Not sure if she woke up during the night as I slept like the dead - other than I know she woke up about an hour after we got to bed, I assume it was wind (she didnt have a burp with her last bottle) I was asleep before Malc got back....!!! :blushing:

I put her to bed at 9 (although she was asleep in my arms from 8 so may as well have gone to bed then!) and gave her an extra bottle (previous one was at 7) and it seems to have done the trick, she was hungry at 7 this morning but now won't settle back down which is most unlike her. Every time I go in there she is chomping on her hand....!!!

The other thing is as well Bridie is that she is getting older and her sleeping might alter slightly as she will become more alert in everyday type things. Teething can be a pain in the bum..literally as it can upset everything from feeding, sleeping and even go as far as upsetting their craps - quite common to get a slightly more runny bum and nappy rash at this time due to more saliva being swallowed.

Yesterday she had her jabs..... oh dear, not a good evening or night! Malc was looking after her when he got home as I had some work to finish, she had been grizzly since we'd got home about 2.30 and nothing changed... she then woke up at 3am, 4am, 5am, 5.30am, 6am........ in the end she had a bottle as she became hungry and thankfully slept until 9.30...

I am pretty sure she has a tooth coming, I am thinkng maybe she's not sleeping as deeply because it hurts and so things like wet nappies are waking her up, whereas normally they wouldnt bother her at night.

she was also very hot after those jabs and went off her food... had hardly any solids yesterday and didnt finish her bottles either.

poor little mite :(

No comfort I'm sure..... but it does sound like teething and unfortunately we all go through it!

Steph was a bit like this, she only had the runny nappies with her eye teeth, we had 2 months of disturbed nights with her, but no teething problems for any teeth after that. Steph never woke at all after 8 months.

Toby's teeth just appeared but he never slept, my first night sleep was the day after his 1st birthday....... but that was because he was in hospital and my Mum stayed with him so that I could sleep! He was out of nappies before he was 2 but still waking several nights a week! By about 30 months he had some kind of sleeping pattern.

I wouldn't swap those memories though as once mine started sleeping they became adorable and independant. At 11 and 9 they get up at the weekend and feed themselves without waking us! I love it!!!!! (This has been happen for about 2 years on and off).

I remeber putting Steph down between 7 and 8 pm but often fed her again around 10.30 and 11pm rather than being woken during the night. It just drifted off naturally by around 8 months.

Good luck!

 Good job, cos you wouldn't get any from me!

If shes unsettled AND chomping AND finishing her bottles (once the needle thing dies down, which is perfectly normal BTW) I would suggest upping her solids, could be that she just needs more food. (along with teeth)

Also, if its any consolation Flynn wakes at 6 am EVERY morning without fail, bang on! And hes grinning and chatting and is most certainly UP!

When Flynn was in NICU they used SUCROSE everytime they did a horrible proceedure (10 times a day!) Just a few drops on the tounge. There is real evidence supporting it apparently. That said its only used for a short, kind of endorphic effect, not as a pain killer like we know :)

Yep, that is what they were on about... amazing.

Well, she managed a whole night's sleep and woke up at 7, which I can live with as long as the rest is uninterupted.

Hope this is her back in her pattern....... I am not worth knowing unless I've had at least 8 hours!!
