Hope it went well for Matt. If it did, is he aware that you can earn quite good money doing evening courses at local community colleges? He could start with one for seniors, perhaps, learning to use PC/Internet that sort of thing. They would be starting from scratch so they wouldn't be uppity and challenging which is hard to take for someone new at teaching. Just a thought. When I was teaching community colleges they were paying about $37 an hour and that was 10 years ago. A couple of 2 hour classes a week would be a great little earner. |

Hi Guys Yeah it was good. There were only a couple of people (Which I was glad about  ). I had put together a little course that is split into 3 parts 1) Creating an email address 2) Jobsearch websites 3) Word processing and letter writing basics We did parts 1 and 2 on Friday. There may be a few more for part 3 which won't be for a couple of weeks. I am also looking at starting my own business "The Home Computing Helper". I will be offering several services (No rude comments Bordy) 1) Basic usage tutorials. 2) Spyware/Adware removals and protection. 3) How to monitor and control childrens internet usage. How to block websites, see where they have been etc. It was quite funny we blocked my daughter from using Myspace (I used some add ons in Firefox). I was checking the computer a week or so later and could see that she had been on Myspace. I did some tracing and found out she had got onto it using a proxy server. Basically it means she could get onto any website without it being logged in our history. Unfortunately for her I had installed Google Desktop which logs all the web traffic. Google desktop is a very handy program for anyone that has not got it. It basically googles your entire machine and lets you search it like you do the web with google. Its a lot quicker than Windows searches and a lot more flexible. For any of you who need it the government is also giving away free content filters at the moment. You can get them here Content filters For anyone being plagued by Adware etc here is a useful site Hosts file I now have some business cards (You can get free business cards and lots of other good stuff from Vista Print . The main thing I need now is to build up my confidence. We have some friends who I will help out to start me off. I'm also in the process of creating myself a website (using one of the free online ones) I will also offer this as a service when I am happy with it. |

that all sounds awesome. I suspect my eldest is pleased that I know nuffin about pc's, I wouldn't have a clue how to trace where she's been and what she's put. As an aside, how come you've blocked 'myspace', she uses that a lot........ is it a dodgy one ? |

Have a look at some of these Myspace We took action after we saw that the photos of her on Myspace made her look a lot older than she is. She also had in her profile that she was 15, she was 12 at the time . We could also see she had been looking at profiles of boys who where in there late teens. We felt that it was not appropriate. |

my niece posted some pictures of herself: she said that they (her and her friend) were messing about - but the pictures looked pretty ermmmmmm suggestive - esp to adults - to her they were fun messing about pictures. |

I spent most of last night and the early hours of this morning trying to search both sites for what my daughter has posted. She hasn't done anything on her full name but searches on her nickname and first name are massive. Anyone any idea how I can reduce this to a managable amount to search ?? :dunno: |

The amount of stuff you have on the hard drive should not really slow it down to much. Actually deleting things will cause more of a slow down. What happens is over time you have lots of space on your hard drive but it is all fragmented because when you delete stuff it just leaves the space where it was. When the computer has to write stuff to the HD it has to write to several different locations (Because of all the holes). You should run a disk defrag fairly regularly as this closes all the holes and makes it easier to write the information to the HD. The program comes with windows and should be in the system tools folder. |
