I think I had a bad reaction to one last night, in fact damn thing still hurts a bit today. Yesterday my leg really ached when I walked and in the evening I had a huge lump come up by the side of my knee - huge it was - looked like another knee cap growing. The area all around the bite was bright red and hot, it irritated like hell too and i did the stupid thing of rubbing it - cos it itched. Well after that the lump was throbbing - like it had a life of its own - still very red and still hot. i put an ice pack on to cool it down and that seemed to do the trick. Today is a lovely yellow looking lump - at least its not throbbing anymore. :P Does anyone else get a bad reaction to them - this is the worse one i've had. I've had some that turn into watery blisters :( Blooming things |

John does..... if he gets one on his calf he'll swell up from the knee down andnot be able to bend his ankle, after the swelling goes the bite itself looks like it came from a rottie not a mossie. he takes vitamin b1 to ward them off, seems to work. |

rottweiler you need to take them for a couple of weeks to get your levels up, take the highest dose you can find and don't be alarmed if your wee is a bit brighter in the colour department. |

It's the females that do the biting and they don't like thiamine which is in vitamin B1. I read somewhere you can overdose on it so don't gorge out on it. |

I have an aloe plant in my garden and slice a leaf off and rub it on the bite as soon as I notice it. It really does the trick, though the sooner you catch it the better. |

I reacted really badly last year to some bites where my whole leg and ankle swelled up. In the end I had to go onto antibiotics for a while. I'm a nightmare for mozzie bites and at the moment I have quite a few which are driving me mad (mainly as I've ran out of my usual tonics) What I find works very well is if I'm around the house or before I go to bed I cover the bite area with Benodine (SP??you know the brown stuff) but otherwise I just a few drops of Rescue Remedy directly on the bite to stop the itching and tiger balm is also a good one to stop the itch. |

I get an itchy lump from mozzies but the sand flies are the things that that give me the really bad reaction! Can't see or hear the little b***ers either. Aloe Vera is good. |

I completely forgot about the sand flies, the mozzies have been so annoying this year. Luckily I don't have such a bad reaction as CG for some reason they just love her (it must be because she's so sweet  ) |

Hi folks! I've been working alot, and have just applied for the job I've been doing since February! (Interview on Monday 0830). On the subject of mozzie bites, I have to agree with the B1 comments: "Some studies suggest that taking thiamine (vitamin B1) 25 mg to 50 mg three times per day is effective in reducing mosquito bites. A large intake of Thiamine produces a skin odor that is not detectable by humans, but is disagreeable to female mosquitoes.[6] Thiamine takes more than 2 weeks before the odor fully saturates the skin. With the advances in topical preparations there is an increasing number of Thiamine based repellent products. Whilst there is considerable anecdotal evidence of Thiamine products being effective in the field (Australia, US and Canada), there has yet to be any clinical trials run to demonstrate the efficacy of these products." (from Wikepedia) As thiamine is water soluble, we should it out if our bodies can't use it. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002401.htm As for treatment Aloe is good, as is Zanza-click which is Swizz and sends a Pezoelectric shock through the bite from Quartz, it's a tiny little thing you could carry in your pocket but I don't know if it's available in OZ. It is possible that people who are prone to getting bitten could have lower thiamine levels, it's suppose to improve mental aclarity as well so it's not a bad thing to take! Jane |
