Well I have been trying to pack boxes all week and have been pulling and dragging some stuff around the house. Have had some back ache since Sunday, but have managed to keep it under control with painkillers. Anyway last night it was pretty bad, so I took some more painkillers and went to bed with hot water bottle on my back. At about 4.00am I needed to get up to go to the loo and really struggled to get out of bed as I was in absolute agony with my back. Eventually managed to get up and then collapsed and could not get up off the floor. The pain was unbearable and everytime I tried to move I was in agony. :( Husband had already left for work (overtime) so had to phone my son on his mobile, as he was asleep in his bedroom and could not hear me shouting for help. He called an ambulance for me and they came about 30 mins later and gave me morphine and some other drugs to inhale. Eventually managed to get downstairs and into ambulance - the neighbours were out watching :ooer: Got to hospital and had more pain relief and had ct scan, I have a herniated disc in my lower spine. Basically the treatment is rest and painkillers. I am now home with a bag full of drugs  This is an absolute nightmare, as we are packing up the house and have to move out next Tuesday, then we have booked to go skiing for four days, and then drive to Brisbane over the next three days :scared: I am not in so much pain now, but feel like I am wandering around in a drug induced haze  |

:flowers: It is so painful when your back goes, make sure you do rest, even if it starts to feel a wee bit better wait until you are properly healed. It always happens at the worst time though doesn`t it. |

Mel, you are just going to have to sit on your butt with a list of what needs to be done and bark instructions at everyone, just accept that it will be done but just not as well as if you were doing it yourself and delegate, delegate, delegate. Make the most of those drugs too |

Having had two nasty back injuries in car accidents (neither my fault :irked: ), Mel, I know exactly how you feel. You MUST rest and, in between rest (when you're up to it), walk. Absolutely NO lifting, stretching or bending: you'll just have to 'organise' OH and tin lids. ;) Try to lay flat on hard surfaces; if your bed is a soft one, get onto the floor on a blanket or two. I always find that laying flat on the floor helps - quite a lot at times. When you have to get up, roll over onto your front and gently bring yourself up into a crawling position next to a table / chest of drawers or something that you can pull yourself up with and use your arms and legs, not your back, to get up. Get some 1000 iu (or higher) Vitamin E and take them twice a day. It's a fantastic healer. Also something like Herron OsteoEaze might help (glaucosamine). Have showers as hot as you can stand it on your back then, before you get out, gradually reduce the temperate to tepid. The hot water helps to ease the pain but is shite for inflamation - the cooler water will help the inflamation (if any). On the house moving side of things: can you cancel the skiing (and get a refund) and ask the new people for a week's extension for settlement? That should at least get you past the worst of the painfulness. Just take care, luv, cos backs are to be looked after. :flowers:  |

Thanks everyone, husband and kids will just have to finish the packing - they are moaning already. Honestly you would think I planned this if you heard them. There is no chance of extending the house settlement or changing the skiing, but that is ok, I wont ski, I will just stay in motel and relax watching tv and reading, and have a bit of peace while husband takes kids skiing  Bordy I was very sorry to miss lunch with Mrs B again, she will just have to come to Brisbane for the next one  |

ah Mel :flowers: I can't see you doing a lot of skiing  even though there's loads to do you have to look after yourself so do as the doc (and PR  ) say and let the others do all the work - it won't kill them. |

Thanks Hevs, but there are enough able bodied people in this house to do the packing
 They just need to be threatened and bribed to do it. To be honest I have gone beyond caring now, they can just throw everything into boxes and in the weeks to come I will sort them out in our new house. Its all getting scary now, the animals are being picked up on Monday and the furniture on Tuesday and we leave Melboune on Tuesday afternoon :( |

Sorry I haven't been on much lately so missed this. What a nightmare
 . Ian has a back injury so the MANY house moves that we have done recently have caused him so much pain it is just miserable because at the end of the day it just has to get done. I hope that you are able to take it easy and get through it in one piece. Good luck. Nicky |

Poor you Mel
:( Are you able to sneak a tens machine out of the hospital before you leave
 I have one for the two deformed disks in my neck and I find it really useful. That and the wheatbag that is constantly on the go in the microwave. Big hugs to you, you have my every sympathy :flowers: :flowers: Oh, on the plus side, when I was off work for 6 months with my neck injury I lost over a stone and a half in weight just through the pain  Put it on again when it got better though  |

I wont be working for a while but I might hire a tens machine, although I never found them any good when I was in labour! I am going to see a chiropractor when we get to Brisbane too. Have been feeling really sick today too, think its all the painkillers, and have lost my appetite, so maybe will lose some weight.
 Not looking forward to the weekend having to order everyone around to get things packed and clean the house  |

My phsio also attached attached the tens machine to the acupuncture needles at one point. That gave immediate relief for a while. |
