I went along to a mates citizenship ceremony today and was gobsmacked. It was so quick and over within minutes - quiet funny actually.

We had to interupt the local council meeting, all told to go into the chambers where they were all have a smoko munchign away, we all just hovered in the doorway until a woman told us to help ourselves as the food was actually for our friend, the councillors had eaten it all PMSL, then the mayor read a script and mumbled his way through, they hadn't got her certificate to give to her so he pretended with an invisible certficate, and it was over....that was truly a classic moment

It was good to see what happened so I know for when ours comes through as yes I have finally got around to filling in the forms on line last weekend :more:

Was yours as quick as this one?

Our ceremony was much more formal than that. There were 236 people there in the local council Town Hall. There was a band and lots of councillors and the mayor, also people from the electoral commission. It took about two hours in total, the first group stood up and stated the oath under God, and the next group did the non religious one, then everyone was individually presented with their certificates and a native plant, and then on to the next table where we had to sign up for the electoral roll.

There were drinks and nibbles afterwards and it did feel really special

Ours was much the same as Mels, but we stood up in groups of 10 to do it. We were last as we were the non religos. There was a choir and we all had to stand up and blast out the national anthem, it was all good.

I got 'done' 22½ years ago! In those days, they only did them in the local town/city hall. I was naturalised in Brisbane City Hall, along with about 45,000 other people ... well, it seemed like it!

No free trees in my day either. :(

All the naturalisees were in the main, ground floor area, whilst family members were in the upper balconies. We all had to read the oath from a card whilst 'invigilators' walked up and down the aisles watching to see that people were actually speaking the words. Can't remember the actual certificate presentation bit - maybe we just got it as we left? :dunno: The whole thing didn't take long.

My Dad refused to get 'done'! He said that until they changed the oath, it was ridiculous for him to do it. In those days, you see, you had to swear allegiance to the Queen; him being a pommie an' all, he thought it was bloody stupid!

My Mum finally got 'done' after Dad died, probably in about 2000. That was a much smaller ceremony in a little room (almost like a small wedding or seminar type of place) in a government building in town. There were only about 8 or 10 people being naturalised, together with a few hangers-on like me. That was all over in a very short time too.

Good onya, I say, to all those who've bin dun! :swaggie: :ozflag: As for the rest of you (Bix :P ) ... pull yer bloomin' fingers out and get on with it!
