I just wondered if anyone can help as to how I would be able to get wireless internet on my laptop when we are on our road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane. I know there are some free hopspots in MacDonalds in places, but how exactly does the laptop connect to them (please excuse me as I am not very technically minded).
:( Also is it possible to buy a pay as you go card, that I could make top up payments to as necessary, to connect laptop to the internet when I am on my travels as I dont want want to get tied up into any long contracts. Thanks in advance to anyone who has answers. |

When the laptop finds a wireless connection it'll tell you. If it's unsecured you'll just be able to browse the internet. If it's secured, it'll have a home page telling you how to access it (and how much). Don't know about the other bit of the question. Alternatively, there is a data card you can buy to give you truly wireless connection (as in anywhere) - but it's pretty expensive, can be slow and doesn't give you much data usage. |

You can find a list of Telstra's wireless hotspots here. Also if you do this Google search, you'll find any number of other lists and offers. The Whirlpool forums are always good for this kind of thing too - have a look at this one. ;) To connect to a wireless network, use the Wireless Network Wizard in your 'My Network Places' folder (this should be on your desktop). As Marco says, if your computer is relatively new-ish, and your wireless network is set up and open, it should tell you when it finds a local wireless network. Yes, you can buy a new SIM card for your phone on a pay as you go basis. If your phone is locked to one particular provider, buy one of their payg SIM cards and just use it when you want to connect to t'internet. :D |

Check out to see if your mobile phone offers you the option to use it as a modem as then you could just use your phone. I know my friend does this as a back up if his internet connection goes down in the house. We bought ourselves an aircard when travelling but most fo those things are on contract, so your phone is a good option. |

I've only ever had wireless. I use iBurst cos I can't get an Unwired signal where I am. Have to use a desktop modem(even tho I have a laptop) to get the signal strength and it has to be on the windowsill pointing in a certain direction because of the buildings around and trees etc. So anyone considering wireless bear these things in mind. In a unit block it's the only broadband access you can have as they don't run the cables into units (at least they didn't used to) so it's wireless or dial-up. Dial-up too slow and I don't have a landline anyway. It's not the cheapest option if you have other choices but for me it's the only one. |
