well, after the rain saga, guess where i have spent the day?
at the fekkn hospital.

mums warfarin is causing some internal bleeding ... she started bleeding this morning, so off to the hossie we went. she has a hb of about 7, so she is now on her 2nd unit of blood and is not looking forward to the threatened sigmoidoscopy (camera up yer bum) tomorrow.
she will be ok, but its back to the twice daily hospital runs again for the next week.
i thought she looked a bit pale and seemed a wee bit breathless when i got home last week, but put it down to her not getting any sun and being stuck in the house.

Oh no Sue I hope she gets better soon enough. I can remember the hassle my Gran used to have on Warfarin and it is just not funny doing all those hospital runs.

That story sounds similar to what my Dad went through at St Marks in London. Some old bloke got out of his bed and wee'd on my Dad in the middle of the night. :o

home at last, bless her.

she practically cartwheeled off the ward she was so happy!!!

funny thing is, cos of her stroke she has severe expressive dysphasia and dyspraxia, but i was gobsmacked at the nurses on her ward not having a clue what this meant ... and couldnt understand why she wasnt able to give herself her insulin properly ... she was so disorientated by her routine being disrupted she couldnt go through her routine correctly, but they had no real understanding of what she was going through :(
but other than that they all thought she was a wee sweety

So glad shes fighting fit again Sue.

One question though? How does a stroke give you dyspraxia? I thought dyspraxia was an autistic spectrum disorder :dunno: Confused now!

One question though? How does a stroke give you dyspraxia? I thought dyspraxia was an autistic spectrum disorder :dunno: Confused now!

according to mums speech therapist its to do with the part of her brain that the stroke affected - her brocas area, and as she is left handed it affected her right side - and her wernikces area ... she now has poor motor skills and co-ordination, and cant process the steps to doing something - i had to whizz round last night at 9 to check she was ok with her insulin, she hadnt done it and she just couldnt figure out what to do with the innolet device (thats shes used twice a day for a year now) to enable her to give herself her insulin.:dunno:
good description here ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broca's_area
if you have a look at this about dyspraxia, particularly the 'causes', it will link it all together :D
http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/dyspraxia2.shtml
the dyspraxia effects of a stroke are often mis-understood or not even diagnosed ... with the fantastic speech therapy she has been having she has made incredible progresss ... its just every now and then her progress gets put back a step like it did with this hospital admission -- staff treat her like a little old lady who is confused, whereas with a bit of understanding and patience they would see she is actually incredibly intelligent and able to most things for herself.

i hope you all took notes ... i will set an exam at the end of the week :D

Jane

its 18 months jane, her therapists have all been astounded at the amount of progress she has made ... this time last year when she was discharged she was unable to walk upstairs, was nil orally, did her own bolus peg feeds 4 times a day along with her insulin, bms and inhalers and had no carers (except me).

prior to this last admission she could do 4 hours round meadowhall, this morning i almost killed her by walking her to the car (about 300 yards)
