This is a long post I won't be offended if you avoid it, everyone else is...

Sitting here at the laptop, the fire is on, nice and cosy, TopCats 1 & 2 curled up lovingly on the daybed grooming one another, what a week it's been getting to grips with the new job...

...then it starts...

Someone in the units nearby is practising the same little few bars on the piano over and over and over and it is the most ennervating, diddly diddly little tune - it was happening last weekend and one or two nights in the week. Now it is Friday and they are really getting stuck in, in earnest.

I'm slowly going

It's been an emotionally fraught week. Can you imagine a fast growing, highly successful little manufacturing business about to launch it's winter range next week, with a second new range in the pipeline going out to the first selected retailers in another week, having had no one person accountable for managing the operations for the last month? And before that the person handling it was out of her depth and it was all going to hell in a handbasket? So no-one accountable for co-ordinating between sales and production, and the director who is basically the general manager only in a half a day every day because he is managing the marketing division of the parent business over the other side of the city? (This man, to whom I report, is amazing, a human dynamo, and very passionate and excited that I am on board because he and two other key people really wanted me to join so he is very open to what I have to contribute). So one of his friends came in for a few weeks as he was between jobs, to help ramp up sales, and he and the director's uni student daughter were having a go at doing the invoicing and other things so there are papers and folders everywhere- can you imagine - the outgoing operations person, the mate and the daughter all keeping separate records in their own way of the bits they did? And me trying to build a jigsaw puzzle with no picture on the box and half the pieces hidden under the rugs but I don't know those pieces exist?

Well by yesterday my head was bursting, people kept coming up to my desk with bits of paper to deal with and of course I had no identifiable system to deal with it and no frame of reference, as in having a broad overview, the picture on the box, as it were. I had been told to be quite fierce and firm so I was and people were beginning to quake a little. :she: So my nice director and I go out for a long meeting where I tell him what I've observed so far and what procedures I think we should put in place and he gets my input on a few other production things. And I said I'm going to be blunt here...Then we went to Officeworks to pick up a pile of stuff we needed - stationery for me and others. Then after work we stay back to brief the others on some of the strategies we came up with. Oh by the way there is a new saleperson too and the two warehouse/production staff are new by about a month and the newly appointed factory manager joined the same day I did.

So by now you are getting the picture.

Then after the meeting after work the creative/sales director (brainchild behind the whole venture) and the new sales lady and I go out for a couple of drinks and a Thai, which had been arranged earlier in the week.

Anyway I get home last night, head bursting, eaten rather too much and should only have had 2 chardies instead of 3, to find parcel advice cards in my letterbox from friends/family (my birthday presents have arrived) and of course I can't get to my local post office so today I try to get them transferred to a nearby one I know is open Saturday - sorry the earliest we can have them at another PO for you is Monday/Tuesday. "But they're my presents from England" I wail quietly down the office phone not wanting anyone to overhear."Sorry" - "OK then send them to the PO near to my office and I'll just pick them up Monday (sniff :( )

I had envisaged catching up with some of my friends and celebrating this weekend, the ones that also have new jobs, maybe inviting them over. Di is in Melbourne visiting her brother, Gwen, who also had her birthday this week, is doing something this weekend. So, no friends coming, no presents, and now would you believe my ISP's email server is down and I can't even get my emails or email my sisters.

And that bloody little tune tinkling away in the background there
And I am absolutely wrung out...

Wail....

Oh TC, you've managed so, so terribly well this week, I'm really proud of you. :flowers:

As for the pressies, well, all good things come to those who wait. :waiting:

You'll just have to have an extra bottle of chardy over the weekend to help you blank out the tinkling and to toast yourself for your achievements (as well as your birthday). :drinkingmates:

Bimey TC - that's one week. I hate it when people practise musical instruments unless they are really good and play whole pieces, I have been known to hurl recorders down the length of the house because of one small tune being played over and over and over again.

Re the work thing - it must be quite satisfying though when you're actually listened to and ideas implemented, granted it sounds hectic and mad but I find that quite exhilarating, but I bet your head is still buzzing though isn't it ? :wha:

As for your birthday :flowers: that's tough, but we'll help you celebrate as I'm sure will TC1 and TC2 and, at least you know you have pressies - just need to wait a while :waiting:

You played some of my chords there TC.
Organisation - procedures.
It's not rocket science is it.
A few basic systems can make life so much easier for everyone.
Looks like you are going to have to lead the way.

Well done on completing the first few hectic days and maintaining your enthusiasm. I can sense you are itching to get things sorted and some sort of even keel.
It'll take a while though won't it ?

And put some loud rock and roll on to drown out the piano :P

Awww TC sounds like a very very hectic week. You sound like the woman though to whip them all into shape at work and it is hard when you are busting to get it all sorted out but are limited to working hours. The only thing is your head is still in work mode thinking of all the things you want to start and put into place once you have left work.

As Ohippy has said it is nice though once it is all in shape and you have that satisfaction that you set up al the systems. I always think that is the best part to any job.

Regarding your birthday that sucks about your pressies :( have an extra long cuddle with your cats and open that extra bottle of wine and celebrate with us all on here

I can understand how you must feel totally and utterly drained, but it's still good to know you've got a job you can get your teeth into and that the hierarchy are going to backing you with your decisions

Have a good rest this weekend, veg out and watch some old movies (or The Holiday - I remember you liked that one) while snugged up in your doona and a hot chocolate or wine.

Oh, and have a virtual :gift: from me.
