Red or White Meat?; Pork

Harry doesn't eat red meat. I am veggie, Dan isn't, so that was our compromise.

One of the cooks at daycare asked me today if he eats Ham, I said no, no red meat, to which I was told that Pork was white meat. When I said that I think it is red, the lady told me I was wrong

I put meat into 3 categories, Cattle, Poultry and Fish, the latter 2 being white and the first being red. Pigs, as far as I am concerned are Cattle, so no go for Harry. A joint of Pork may be white, but Ham is red/pink, so I can accept its a grey area.

The way she told me I was wrong has really peeed me off. What business is it of hers, just dont give him the f'ing meat and do you bloody job. I dont pay the centre a shit load in fees to have some busy body who has to be right all the time, tell me I am wrong

OK rant over. Pork, red or white?

I would say it is red meat but now you have said I'm not too sure

Maybe spell it out to them in plain English so they understand that you mean only poultry and fish and say it in a huffy hoity toity voice :D

It's official it's red meat due to the myoglobin it contains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_meat

Erm......before any rockets get shoved......

"that of pork is traditionally considered "white""

Did you miss that bit?

I've always considered pork to be white meat.

The bit about myoglobin refers to dark poultry meat.

But it is only considered as a white meat because of the stigma attached to red meat so they tried to get it across as being "the other white meat"

http://www.perturb.org/content/pork-red-meat.html

and to sum up the other myoglobin bit here's another link

http://www.farmerjohn.com/ReadySetServe/Ar...37-40513734cc5b

Pork: The Other White MeatŪ

Even though pork is generally white in color, when cooked it is still considered "red meat" because it contains higher levels of a protein called myoglobin than chicken or fish. The amount of myoglobin contained in meat is what determines its color. Like beef, lamb and veal, pork is also classified as "livestock" and all livestock is categorized as "red meat." Pigs today are raised much leaner than they were years ago, now containing 35% to 50% less fat.

"Pork is a nutrient-dense food, meaning that its nutrient level is high in proportion to its calorie content. Pork contains a high level of some of the essential B vitamins, such as B12, B6, thiamin, niacin, and riboflavin. It is also rich in other nutrients, such as phosphorous, zinc, potassium, iron, and magnesium. One three-ounce portion of pork provides approximately half of the daily requirement of protein."

two years ago my mum had to change her diet and her doctor classified pork as red meat - something that I had been told at catering college.

Mum was shocked as she had always considered it white meat, but i'm pretty sure that white meat is poultry - your chicken and turkey flesh. then you have fish, then you have game

I think it's just the changing times we live in...

I'm with Marco and Catgirl's Mum - "when I was a gel" pork was classed as white meat. I can see why that doesn't fit, nutritionally and biologically speaking, but back then that's what it was considered to be.

Hope this is helpful and clarifying, not being argumentative or anything.

Just a change in status as more information becomes available over the years, maybe.

That confuses me too. Why is white meat acceptable? Interested, not hostile. I could never in a month of sundays turn veggie but sometimes have meat free meals.

I was a vegetarian from the age of 15 to the age of 28 due to hating animals being killed or hurt, but then I never ate any meat or fish. That was tough in those days as there was nowt in the supermarkets and just dried soya in the health food shops :(

I'm not being hostile either, am just interested

Dan and I were having heated discussions about it when I was pregnant. I wanted to raise him veggie and Dan didnt, so that was our compromise. Not much of a compromise as he is still eating meat, but at least we both felt like we won a little.

I agreed to white meat, but made it clear that I would not cook it, and as I do the majority of the cooking, he is veggie :D But I have to keep the facade of the compromise going.

One way to get your point across AB is to tell them unless it flies or swims it's off his menu.

After all who has seen pigs flying.....or cows with a wetsuit ? :P
