Here's eldest's homework for this week :

Pick from the following challenges :

1. You need to design and create something that makes a "pop" noise at least 5 seconds after you have touched it.

2. You need to design and creat something that will fly at least 6 seconds in the air after you have released it.

3. You need to design and create somethingthat will roll the length of a flat desk without being pushed.

Anyone got any ideas ? I'm completely stumped :dunno:

Get an old 35mm film canister. Put a drop of water in it then put an alka seltzer in. Put the lid on and a few seconds later the lid will fly off in the air with a fair sized pop.

that's a good idea. Anything else I can substitute for the canister as we're all digital here ?

Rig up some kind of loo roll, pencils and elasctic band thing that travels after the elastic bands have been twisted.

so how would you attach the paper blades to the balloon so that they are loose to rotate and don't pop the balloon ?

That sounds like a Paddle Pop stick or two and rubber band thing to me. ;)

Bloody typical. I bet you copied all your homework off your mate when you were at school. That's not the same as asking for help you know, that's getting someone else to do it for you :P

you know, I did copy all my homework :blushing:

However, this is Tallulah's homework and it's not fair that she has dunce parents who are completely uncreative and design free :nosepicker:

Stick the rubber band through the length of the loo roll and have each end pushed through a pencil or paddle pop either end. So you have a loo roll and 2 sticks flat against each end with the rubber band slipped over the stick and running though the tube..............flipping heck that is hard to explain

Then wind the sticks around so the band winds up and let it rip.

I always like the sparkler pop one. Get an old pop bottle lid and put a hole in the top of it, scrap a bit of sparkler into a little pile then put the bottle lid on top of the pile. Stick the rest of the sparkler in the hole (better if the sparkler is cut down slightly) then light the sparkler and BANG

Or how about a small hot air balloon, use a paper bag (sandwich size sort of thing), get a candle and light the candle. Then place the bag (not too closely!) over the top of the candle and let it fill up and let it rip :D

flippin' heck - these challenges are going to be dangerous - can you imagine a class of 25 11 year olds performing these in school ?

Someone also said today about putting an egg without a hole in a microwave - apparently the pop after 5 seconds there is quite good - I just don't fancy cleaning up the mess !!

Does this help?

http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/heliplan.php

Instead of a film cannister a small vitamin jar or anything with a pop top, ie not screw or twist type.

Thanks for that - but paper aeroplanes and me just don't go well. I've tried all the techniques but mine just nosedive.

Wierd really, but I worked for Bae riveting the wings onto planes - you'd think I'd be good at this sort of stuff :P

not a bad idea - although 5 seconds in a science experiment is an awful long time - do they last that long before they pop ??? :dunno:

One of our projects at college was to see who could lauch a water powered rocket the furthest (oh, we won!)

2 litre fizzy drink bottle (though we used to have quite a stock of 2 litre beer bottles for some reason . )

Car tyre valve in the bottom.

1/2 full of water and pressurise using a foot pump.

Ours was launched as if it was a Rocket Propelled Grenade.

Definitely flew for more than 6 seconds!

This is probably NOT recommended for younger children but excellent fun for any crazy people out there.

We have an on going project that has been taken to school by various kids and I have used as a sample lesson. Vinegar and bicarb rockets! Great fun! You don't need to do the whole thing though as to start the lesson I demonstrate the concept using vinegar and bicarb inside an old custard powder tin. Pile in a few spoons of bicarb and pour in some vinegar and quickly put the lid on the tin. Then if you are lucky you get a 5 second delay but you get one almighty loud pop as the lid flies off  .
This is what you get for having a rocket scientist as a hubby and kids who want him to bring his work home  . We have various size pop bottles on rooves and in trees in the garden whilst he is working on perfecting the mixture  .

So when he can't figure out the shopping list or how to clean house properly do you say - look it's not rocket science...

yeah - done the vinegar and bicarb, I think I may be pushing it to get the 5 second delay though !!

Tonight I was armed with a pop top small tupperware pot and alka seltezer - filled it with water, popped tablet in, lid on, waited and waited and waited nothing happened. Tried it with a small amount of water, tablet in, lid on, buggar all :(

I don't think I'll make a very good scientist
