for those of you who have built a house or know about these sorts of things..... i could do with some advice

we have found a block we like but i know it will need some retaining work done down one side, there is a house which resembles the haunted mansion atone side which has been built on a hill about 1.5metres higher than the block we are after, there is no retaining just a hill with a fence on it, so does anyone habe any idea what retaining walls are likely to cost.

I will need to get an engineers report done so i can get an exact site works cost from the builder before we commit to the block anyway but the engineers report will cost about $1500 so i want to be fairly sure we can afford the site costs before i pay for the report as we are running very close to blowing our budget.

When we were looking at walls we were looking at paying $6 per block that included the blocks, labour, cement render etc :o :o :o

As a retaining wall it should be cheaper but it would depend on the type of blocks you are looking at using or how you are planning on doing the retaining wall? i.e. do you want a bolder one?, a dressed wall, a standard block wall, a stone caged wall, a wooden staked wall etc etc

i just want something that will stop the haunted mansion next door from sliding into my pool :P

The walls on the other side are all done with those big limestone blocks.... i'll dig out a pic of it and post it for suggestions

If you are looking at the same blocks just work out how many you would need for the length of the wall then ring up and get a quote from a quarry. You would ten be looking at a machine to move them into place so allow about $80 an hour for a decent machine and operator. They could move the stones very quickly into place but it would depend on how long the wall was as to how many hours you allow.

Post u a picture and the length of the wall you want to build and I could give a better idea as this is Roy's type of thing

Ooooh is it, thats good, i was beginning to think you were a wall builder in your spare time

doesn't a retaining wall have to go down a certain distance and be x number of blocks wide depending on how high it has to be???? Like i said far too complicated

You would need to take into account foundation and depth. The Engineer though would tell you how deep and how wide it would have to be regarding the amount of pressure from the soil/landscape it will be retaining, but Roy could give you a rough idea as from what you have described you are looking at a straight forward boulder type wall similar to the other wall you have already.
