We haven't used our Halifax credit card for about 4 months now. Do what needs to be done on our Aus Virgin card so Kevan rang them to ask them to cancel the card and account and explained why. He dealt with a really helpful lady who fully understood and who said no problem, it will be done. A couple of weeks later we receive in the post a letter telling us our credit limit has been increased and please find new card attached. We also received the card protection renewal paperwork at the same time. I wrote back, enclosing the letter and cut up card and explained again using little words  . At the same time I cancelled the payment for the protection and enclosed confirmation of that, explaining (again) that as we no longer had UK cards we didn't need their card protection service. Today we received a letter from the protection people asking for payment as they have found that they cannot access our account for the premium. We also received a letter saying thank you for your letter and for returning the card. Your account and card have now been cancelled, BUT please be aware that there is an outstanding balance on the account of GBP 0.00 and that we will continue to receive monthly statements until the balance has been cleared. There is so much I want to say to them but have decided to file it under crap together with the bloody child tax credit bollox and have a rant to you lot instead. I am still waiting for a reply from the child benefit morons because they don't understand words of one syllable either :she: |

I can't get the Halifax to register our new address in Australia. I went in with a written letter before we came out explaining that we were moving to Australia but had no forwarding address at the time so gave them Gemma's address as a contact one. I now keep writing them letters and ringing them on the telephone banking service and they keep replying that I need to visit our branch to change the address!!!!!!!! Can't quite seem to comprehend that we are on the other side of the world. Just wait until I get back to see my grandson, I'll be paying a visit to the bank :she: :she: |

ok i'll try again as i just posted this but comp bombed out When i tried to change address with Halifax i was told that only UK residents can hold accounts with them (something to do with Gov restrictions) and to close the accounts we had to do so in branch!!!! I've had no such problems with Lloyds TSB, have changed address (account and credit card) had a lovely letter to confirm wishing me all the best in new country etc etc (already typed this out once) So i've left the money getting interest at moment in Halifax, we'll pop in there and close it when we go back to UK for a visit!! |

LOL, reminds me of an urban myth about a guy who kept receiving a gas bill for 0.00, after the umpteenth bill he sent them a cheque for 0.00 and an invoice for the postage  Whats your problem with child tax credits? We keep recieving letters telling us to update our details. Its states that our entitlement is 0. I rang them from here and told them that we dont live in the UK anymore and they said that had all been recorded when we left and we have nothing to worry about, but we keep getting the letters. The last one we got this week told us we have been overpaid by £75, they can whistle for it, we did everything by the book, if they cant get it right thats their problem!! |

Word of warning regarding Lloyds TSB credit card. They will start charging a £35 annual fee to 'low users' - so if you only use it infrequently be warned. :hide: |

You may wish you hadn't asked. The child tax benefit morons are my favourite rant at the moment. A month or so before we left the UK, I rang them and explained we were moving to Aus, that all our money, earnings etc would be in Aus and we would not be earning or living in the UK as from the 18th November 2005. Very helpful lady was all excited for me  said she would send me a form to sign and date and bobs your uncle. She said that from our records, they were behind with a small payment to us but once that had been made it would all be cancelled. I asked that everything be cancelled from 18th November because it would be easier and I wasn't going to get my knickers in a twist about 20 quid or whatever it was. Got the form - she had filled it out for me, I signed and dated and returned. I then got confirmation of it all. Nice one i thought :member:  Two months after we got here, I had two letters forwarded from nice lady who now owns our old house, one addressed to me and one to Kevan but identical saying thanks for the change of circumstance. No monies owed by either side. Could we sign the confirmation sheet. Did that, and gave them our address because I felt sorry for new house owner still getting mail. Every two months we got two letters - one each saying identical stuff - no monies owed, if circumstances change we must let them know. We then got a letter stating they had over paid and we owed them over 200 quid. Politely I explained by letter that no actually we didn't owe them and enclosing copies of all correspondence. Got two letters back saying we owed them over 200 quid - would we please pay or they would start official proceeding against us. Wrote back again, enclosing all copies again. Got one reply (addressed to both of us) explaining that the reason we owed them 200+ quid was because I hadn't told them early enough that my husband had left me and we were now a one parent family!!! WTF. Wrote back, explaining again - more copies, asking a) where they had the info that my husband had left me; b) WTF that had to do with the price of eggs; c) if he had left me, why had they addressed the letter to both of us; and d) we don't owe you a thing. Got a letter back saying would we please explain why we THOUGHT we didn't owe them anything and if the reason was good enough, they would study our case. My last letter back was still polite but fairly strong. I am still awaiting a reply. They are incompetent, moronic, wa**ers who stand as much chance of getting money out of us as I have of buying a house on the moon. If for any reason we moved back to the UK I would not apply for any child tax credit however much I believe it is our money anyway because of the ridiculous tax you have to pay on everything about three times. It makes me f***ing boiling. Halifax are moronic amateurs by comparison. Gosh, I feel better now  |

We keep getting a letter each, what a waste of paper. All said we owed nothing until the last letter came this week saying we owe £75. Fat chance of them getting a penny from me. They are a bunch of morons. My mate got a£1k from them a few years ago. Dozens of phone calls were made making sure they were underpaid by that much. The money sat in an account untouched for a year, then they finally thought sod lets spend it so went on holiday. 3 years after the alleged underpayment they get a letter saying they were overpaid by £1k  She is fighting it, but she has buckleys against the tax office, they are an untouchable bunch of tossers!! |

I got letters from Family Tax Credit saying I had been overpaid by 300 pounds in 2004. What I cant understand is that your family tax credit was based on your earnings for the previous tax year. We left UK in October 2004, and I had phoned the Family Tax idiots and told them we were moving to Oz. They said fine and stopped payments from October 2004. As far as I understand these payments were based on the 2002/2003 tax year, so how can I have been overpaid, I worked for all that time and so did husband. When we were here in rented house I had mail directed to me from Uk and got letter from Family Tax idiots asking for 300 pounds overpayment. I wrote back explaining that no way did I owe them anything as they had stopped paying me in Oct 04 and giving rental address and then continued to recieve correspondence from them demanding payment or else they would take legal action. I gave up replying to them in the end, they are idiots, and did not give them my new address when I moved. |

their system for calculating is totally stupid ... they pay you based on what you earnt last year but then if your earnings change you have to tell them so they can recalculate so they dont overpay you!! according to them, we owe them thousands ... and we have very upolitely told them where to shove it. they agreed it wasnt feasible for us to pay it back as it was their error ... then got another letter saying we owed about £5k. told em where to stick it :D not heard owt for about a year now ... but no doubt will soon cos they are overpaying us now - told em but htey just say wait until your yearly update review. so we put the money in our savings account for aus and whatever we owe back will be paid back a bit at a time - my aunt said ''well, its like an interest free loan, isnt it?''   |

See that's what I don't get. You tell them they are overpaying you because you are honest, others don't. They then say oh just leave it until your yearly review. By that time it's possibly run into thousands but you are supposed to look after it, not spend it until such time as they update their records. It's not bloody complicated. It's a computerised system. What are they doing the rest of year if everything gets left until review time?? Here, you tell Centrelink immediately circumstances change and those changes are acknowledged immediately and your payment are altered accordingly immediately. If the incompetent morons are told they have over paid you, it's down to them. If they don't change it immediately then they should lose it. They'd soon change the system. |

Centrelink arent immune from morons too. Dan is an Aussie, so when we first got here we applied for Family Assitance, CCB and Tax credits are we were entitled to all of them until we started working. Dan started in August I started the last week of July and our benefits rightly stopped, except CCB which was reduced to the minimum. 2 months ago we receive an invoice from centerlink for $800, they are trying to claim back the family assitance we were given before we stated work. Dan called them and they have deferred it until tax time, but its annoying because the guy we saw at Centrelink told us what we were entitled to and filled out all the claims for us, now they want it back. Doesnt sound right to me. We have done everything right, called them when we started working and let them know about any changes to salary and childcare, but the numpties still dont get it right. What hope has the average Joe got when the people who are supposed to be doing it all for you cant get it right. |

They dont seem to have paid any attention to the letter/form I sent giving my parents address for contact. Given that with the original letter I sent a cheque as payment for some tax I owed due that January which they managed to cash I cant understand it. You're right, bunch of bastards! What gets me most cross is you have no comeback, if you dont pay up they just take it on and on and on and in the meantime charge you interest every day. If they find they've overcharged me for tax for my last UK year I will be sending them an invoice for interest on the overcharged bit, see how they like it! |

It must depend on who you talk to. Our cirumstances have changed alot in the last few years and I always in form them straight away and it gets altered within weeks. Itend to over estimate our earning so that there is no risk of us owing them. If they say leave it until the review I say no thanks. |
