.......my name is Kernow and I am an alcoho***. Sorry, wrong group

Start again, hi my name is Kernow and I am just scribing a few lines by way of introduction to your forum. :new:

I have recently 'met up' (on the BE forum) with one of your more prolific contributors, by the name of Bix, who, as it turns out, is a brother Cornishman who grew up just a stones throw from my humble place of upbringing back in the hallowed Land of the Pasty. We discovered that we have mutual friends, albeit we have never actually physically met each other !! Small world or what? He kindly suggested that I visit here to sample the superior wit, friendly banter and sound experience of your membership :)

My OH and myself are currently residing in UK, after a previous emmigration attempt back in 2002 / 3. Which, for a number of reasons, didn't really work out after 8 months. We have current PR visas until Oct. this year, and are struggling with the decision to give it another go down there. This is not quite as much of a 'no brainer' as it may sound, mainly because we are no youngsters, and this would really be s**t or bust.

So, if you don't mind, we'll be asking a lot of questions of you over the next few months, in order to help us to make a decision. Any advice will be gratefully received.

Hope to hear from you in due course, and thanks.

What he really means by this is he used to light fires on the cliffs in stormy weather to entice unsuspecting ships onto the rocks.

.....and he aint sure if he can get away with it in Australia.

Pieces of eight.....squalk.

Hi Babs

Thanks for that !! We're not totally convinced yet........but well on the way.

Where will you be headed? What do you think of UK right now? What's prompted the re-think? Were you, by any chance, disappointed after being back a short while, and wished you'd stuck it out in Oz a little longer? I know we do :(

Wish you every success .

Hi Sasha

We were in Canberra (Yarralumla) for 4 months during the bush-fires of 2002. 1 km from the fire-front at one point :o

Then moved to Wollongong for the remainder. Great place, we loved it, but not easy to find work at that time. I think it has developed alot since then. :)

We're planning on being in Sydney for at least one year, and then......who knows.
Depends on work really.

We are near Wollongong. Great place, but you are right about the work. I managed to get a job at the Uni, but Dan has to commute up to Sydney. We live in Thirroul in the northern burbs though, so the commute isnt to bad.

Hi Claire,

We looked around Thirroul and Corrimal when we first got to 'the Gong'. What a great place, but a pain of a commute to Sydney on the train, and worse by car I guess. But then there's Towradgi Beach.............bliss !!!

What line is Dan in?

My OH works in Management Accounting, and she hates it, and I in IT, and I'm about fed up with that after 20 yrs. We're looking to start fresh and enjoy what's left of our lives, albeit in a more modest lifestyle. Too much stress makes Jack a dull boy !! We know it will be tough for at least a couple of years, but no tougher than trying to maintain a reasonable standard of living here. (More taxes, pay-per-mile driving, overcast skies 9 months of the year etc; etc;) :ooer:

Enjoy, and remember you could be here !!!

Bye for now. :)

The work situation is picking up down here. A lot of people are leaving Sydney to live somewhere less congested and all the services that they need are coming down too.

I would much rather live down here and put up with 1.5hr commute, saying that I work 15 mins from home, but if I had to commute I wouldnt be too peeed off about it.

Never been to Towradgi beach, I find I stick to the North for some reason :dunno: The beaches are beautiful. Stanwell park is bliss, Thirroul is lovely out of season and has the best chippy outside of the UK, Coledale is great and has a small campsite opposite the beach and almost every beach has a tidal pool if you want to get out of the rough stuff. Its one big resort down here

Dan is in buying/procurement/stock etc... I'm an accountant same your your OH, work for accountants and IT people down here is good, we are the neccessary evil for all industries

I cant recommend the Illawarra more mate, its the hidden secret of NSW

Are you a qualified accountant? My OH did AAT and all her experience is bt experience. I guess it would be difficult to find job as QBE accountant?

On the contrary, I am part qual and am working as a System Accountant. They were more interested in my experience than bits of paper.

Some agencies can be hard to get round, but the one I found work through were great. They saw the obvious acheivements on my CV and as the agent new my boss he put me forward. Everyone knows everyone down here where accountancy is concerned, so if you impress one you will be in.

If you decide to come down to this area I can put you on to a good agent
