Bush Fire Season; What precautions should be undertaken?

As this season is being publicised as being the worst ever for bush fires, and many have already started with dire consequences, I thought it might be a good idea to bring some precautionary advice to the attention of everyone, especially those of you who are 'new Aussies'. Below are two links from credible sources which outline some excellent advice on the precautions which everyone should consider undertaking prior to and during bush fire season.

The EMA (Australian Government's 'Emergency Management Australia') has an online 'Bushfire Action Guide' which is fairly basic but contains some sound advice.

The RAC (Royal Automobile Club) has a more comprehensive guide entitled 'Bush Fire Protection Tips' and includes advice on precautions prior to building a new home. The guide covers the following topics:

  • Long term precautions
  • Before you build
  • Alternative water sources
  • Sprinkler system
  • Roof mounted sprinklers
  • Landscaping
  • Fire retardant plants
  • Windbreaks
  • As summer approaches
  • Bush fire kit
  • The day of the fire
  • Decide to go
  • Decide to stay
  • When the fire front arrives
  • Important tips for fighting fires
  • Refuges
It is a good idea to read up about this natural Australian hazard as most Aussies are affected by it one way or another at some point in time. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that it only affects people who live in rural areas. 'Bush' fires can sweep through anywhere and very quickly.

Please make yourself aware of the precautions you can take or help and advice that you may be able to pass onto others.

Thanks for that RAC link PR. I have printed it up and am going to make sure we all read it before sticking it onto the fridge.

We are at very real fire danger risk here, and with our garden being so overgrown it is a worry. We have cleared a lot of the bush that was manic by the front of the house (touching all the front windows) but have still got a lot more to clear away. Trouble is with Terry's dodhy wrist and my limited physical ability I don't think we will get it all done this year. The previous owners were Australian born and lived here for 16 years including through a couple of fires over the road so you would have thought they would have known better and kept the garden under control.

I 'dd further add it definitely helps to keep your bush well trimmed. If I had a bush I know I'dd trim it regularly.

Moisturising daily helps too.
