Med Checks; What was your doctor like?

Whilst researching about the medicals required for immigration purposes, I've noticed that there seems to be quite a variation between doctors at different locations, both in terms of the doctor's thoroughness and the fees they charge.

If you've already done your meds, I'd love to hear what your experience was like. Would you please tell me which doctor/s you saw, where he/she was located (town will do), how much they charged and what they were like generally.

MrPR has yet to do his medical and he's worried about his blood pressure, so any thoughts on that side of things would be appreciated too! ;)

Cheers,
PR

Bloody marvellous, no boob or other inspections, just a quick chat while he took your BP, checked your eyes, listened to your heart, then on the couch for some blood. We had our weight done before we went into the doc's office (and urine test too) and just told them our height.

Then round the back to the BUPA hospital for your xray.

We were in and out of the doc's office in about 5 mins, maybe less.

Easy peasy Japanesy! :D

Yep - a doddle (except for handing over the cheque that is!).

Bloke down in Southampton. Originally from Tas and we spent 3/4 of the time talking about Oz. Otherwise as Bridie said - blood pressure, height/weight, urine, quick squizz at the eye chart and that was about it if I remember correctly.

X Rays done at the Bupa hospital a couple of hours before so just handed over to the doc.

That was meant to be Heathrow! Not well at hthe moment, struggling, actually someone might know, I've got a chest infection and my GP has put me on anti-biotics. I'll be OK for the chest x-ray and med. on Monday wont I? Rich said we should change the app. for another day, but I don't think I can go much longer on our detox regime and I just want to get it over with!

The guy who does the Isle of Man medicals was also a breeze. In and out, didn't really seem to be what we expected. I don't think he was particularly looking for anything. Once the blood tests came back and was all clear, the x-rays were also all clear, he didn't really have to look for much else.

I think you have to have something seriously wrong to fail your medical.

He is a retired GP and does the Australian thing for a bit of extra pocket money! Cost us around £500 so not bad for an hours work!

Thanks blokes and sheilas! This is all very reassuring.

Beki, I do hope you're feeling better. Were you well enough to do your meds and, if so, how did you get on?

What a day! TY PR am feeling tickerty boo now, the anti-biotics cleared my chest in 48 hrs, phew!

Had our chest x-rays at Ashford hosp. They run a walk in and you get done in order that you arrive. We arrived at 10am and were done in about 40 mins. Only Rich and I needed this as LEO all young enough not to have to. £48.89 each. We got the x-rays in a sealed envelope to take to the Dr at the Med booked for 2pm. It has to be sealed so the Dr knows it's your x-ray.

Meds were really easy, I am a worrier and honestly there is nothing to worry about! Drink loads of water before you go though so you can do a nice clear pee in a pot. The twins who are 4 didn't have to do a wee sample but Lauren who's 5 did, there were lots of giggles coming from the loo getting that I might add! Lauren and I both decided it was much easier for boys to do! LEO did not have to give any blood.

I did have to provide all the paperwork on Eve's special med. situation. (she had a kidney removed when she was 2, it was found to be not working at my 20 week scan, and had become problematic so they removed it), hopefully this will be ok, she's perfectly healthy (apart from rotten hay-fever at the mo.) and has an extra BIG right kidney that's A1! They just photo copied all the paperwork I've kept and will send it with the meds.

Rich and I had to give some blood (from a vein, not a pin prick) for HIV, and he took our blood pressure listened to our hearts and breathing and he felt my tummy and Rich had a ball squeeze and cough test. Reflex knee quick test, eye test, ears looked into and our height and weight noted. It took about 2hrs for all five of us.
The photos for the paper work have to be proper passport rules photos (even for the sprouts), we have had to re-do one of the twins photos as it wasn't perfect, as in her head wasn't straight or central on the square. The cost of the meds was £120 each for us and £52 each for the kids. We don't have tatoos so there were no extra charges there. (I know these can bump the bill up by about £100 each adult.)

This was done at the Aviation Med Centre, Longford, near Heathrow. The Dr was really friendly and great with the kids.

So that's that out the way. Fingers crossed it'll all be OK and Rich is hoping and praying this is the last expence towards our VISA!!!!!

DON'T FORGET TO DRINK LOTS OF WATER BEFORE YOU GO! :drinks: :drinks: :drinks: :drinks: :drinks:
Now I'm having my second glass of wine (can't go too mad as I'm still taking anti-biotics) and it's Lovely!!!!!!! :D

That's a fab post, Beki, thank you! :flowers:

I'm glad you're feeling much better now, and I'll bet you're both relieved to have got that bit over and done with.

I'd join you in that glass of wine, but don't think I'd fit!!! ;) In any event, I'm enjoying a G&T. :glass: :D

Many thanks for taking the time to type out your experience - it really is much appreciated. :thumb:

They all do things differently though. I used a private hospital in Hitchin where the x-rays were done down the corridor from the doctor. He also asked that I take my urine sample with me so no drinking loads beforehand, just did it in the morning - a lot easier on the bladder!!

Lots don't do the "cough" test on men. Oh and whatever you do, tell hubby NOT to forget his passport! I did and Kevan had to drive home like a maniac to collect it, they need it to prove you are who you say you are.

I've often wondered why some of the do the cough test / boob check and some dont..... you'd think there would be a set thing they have to do wouldnt you?

Or maybe some are just more pervy than others!

And the urine test one. I could have been a major druggy who had someone else do a sample for me :ph43r:

Yeah, I've gathered that, Pen, from reading various things. That's why I thought I'd ask folks on here ... people I can trust. ;)

It does seem odd that there's such a variance in methodology!

Oh, and I'll make sure that MrPR has his passport with him too ... thanks for that!!

Had our x-rays done by a Welsh man who told me I was a "large lady" and they may have trouble seeing into my chest clearly enough. Then the doctor (in Chichester) called me "a woman of a certain age". Bloody marvellous!! I was 42 when our meds were done.

Actually, give the doctor his dues, Alex had to have several blood tests even though he was only 12 years old, because he had previously had numerous blood transfusions when he was on life support with meningitis. The doctor knew that I was worried about this and actually sent me an email a week later letting me know that everything had been ok. Good of him I thought. Oh yes, I did have the boob check. Probably just checking to see why they are so large!!
