I've read a lot of comments about the charges made by Australian banks for ATM usage over the last two years, and often reply saying that people needn't pay these fees, if they get the right account. It seems like the UK is the same in some respects http://www.which.net/campaigns/personalfin...anking/atm.html Maybe its just the new migrants and temp workers to the UK that get caught with these fees. I assume the locals know how to avoid them ;) |

hmmmm.........the high street banks dont charge to use mainstream atm machines. the ones that charge are the machines that are popping up in pubs/clubs/restaurants/corner shops.......i used one the ohter week at a garage (cos the bank ones were down and i was in a hurry) and got charged £1.75 just for withdrawing £20!! I think the ones in pubs/clubs must make a bluddy fortune - when i was a youngster you went out with a tenner and it lasted -when you drank your tenner it was home time! now, you can get cash just about anywhere.....and i would imagine these pub/club machines just prey on people when they are possibley vulnerable and not fully in control of their thought processes (ie drunk!!! lol!) - it gives them the option of partying for longer....the pub/club makes more money and the poor customer is several quid shorter!! Must admit, in light of recent events around cash machines, i usually go into the bank during the day and use the inside machine, or get cashback when im buying stuff......dont trust the hole in the wall atms any more  |

Looks like it may be set to be changing:
Maybe it will end up the same as here, where ATM transactions are only Free at the bank you are with. |

i find that quite amazing.....cos any machine i have used always says either 'you wont be charged' or 'you will be charged-do you wish to continue?' I must admit I use mainly the big banks atms, or like the other week the convenience one that charged me £1.75 - and that did warn me and ask me if i wished to continue with the transaction. think its a lord woolf scenario with bank charges - the warning could be written in huge red letters on the opening page and people would still not take any notice :D |
