Sophie Delezio accident

5 year old Sophie Delezio, who was badly burnt in a childcare centre accident in 2003, has been hit by a car in Sydney's north. Sophie's father, Ron, said the car struck her when it failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing. She was in a pram being pushed by her father when the car struck. She has been airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, and full condition has not been confirmed, but it is believed she has suffered a broken leg. Sophie was badly burnt in December 2003 when a car burst into flames after slamming into the Roundhouse Childcare Centre at Fairlight, in Sydney's northern beaches. She lost both her feet, some fingers and her right ear in the accident that occurred when she was just two.

Sophie Bounces Back (from the Courier Mail)

SOPHIE Delezio has mustered her trademark courage for her latest battle in life, with her condition stabilising more quickly than doctors expected.

Fears doctors had that her heart may have been injured when she was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing last Friday have been allayed, with the latest tests showing her heart function is "excellent".

Almost all of the ribs on the right side of her body were broken, and in the 12 hours after the accident she lost twice her body's blood volume.

The doctor in charge of her care at Sydney Children's Hospital, Dr John Award, said yesterday the bleeding had stopped.

He said while her condition was still critical and she remained on life support, she was stable.

Sophie's father Ron asked for people to give blood as a gift for sick children.

"She's doing very well . . . Sophie is going to go through pain just with the broken bones in her body. But she's alive and she'll get through this I'm sure."

More than 8000 messages of support had last night been posted on a website called Wishes for Sophie.

FIVE-year-old Sophie Delezio gave her dad a special 53rd birthday present yesterday . . . she sang him Anthony Callea's hit song, The Prayer – in Italian.

Standing on her prosthetic legs and wearing her favourite mermaid costume, Sophie belted out the song she normally sings in the back seat of the family car with her six-year-old brother Mitchell.

"You can't talk when I'm singing," she warned confidently, before launching into the ballad with a beautiful smile. "I know it because I listen to it all the time."

The courageous girl, who has beaten overwhelming odds to survive two life-threatening car accidents in two years, has spent the three days since leaving hospital easing back into her home routine.

"I'm glad I'm home because Mitchell wanted somebody to play with him," Sophie said. "And he was missing me."

Awww, bless her!

The rest of that article can be read here - there's a piccie of her and her brother too. :D
