Getting Started – How to Use this Board

The My Controls Section
The first thing you want to do is to create a profile so we know a little bit about you. Click the My Controls link, which is at the top right of all pages. The My Controls page contains all of your personal settings, including personal messages, profile info, signature info, and avatar settings. We'll go over all these in more detail later on. To start off with, let's edit your profile info. Click the Edit Profile Info link which appears the left side of the page, just under “Personal Profile”.

Editing Your Profile
Here you can fill in your date of birth, messenger contacts, home page, location, and interests. Fill in any info you wish to give - - none of it is required - - then click the “Amend my profile” button. Remember that your e-mail address will not be shown to anyone in the interest of privacy. If you fill in a birth date, it must be complete including the year. The board does not let you fill in just “July 1,” for example. One helpful piece of information is your location. It’s helpful if you fill in your country and the time zone you live in. Mine is “USA (Central Time)”. Note: for some reason, the board seems to default your birth year as "2000". If you want to add profile info, but not put in a birthdate, you have to make sure the "2000" is cleared or it won't accept any of your changes.

Your Title and Ranking Changes
The title and ranking changes are based on the number of posts you make, nothing else. The title doesn’t give you any particular rank within The4Horsemen, but it does reward you for posting. Your beginning title is Freeman. Here's how your title will change, based on the number of posts you make:

Ranking Change

  • 0-9 posts: Askr (First man; created by Odin)
  • 10-24 posts: Midgard (Abode of mankind; the earth)
  • 25-49 posts: Sleipnir (Eight-legged horse of Odin)
  • 50-74 posts: Bori (Progenitor of gods)
  • 75-99 posts: Ymir (Giant... World is created from his body)
  • 100-199 posts: Yggdrasill (Giant tree supporting universe)
  • 200-299 posts: Baldur (God of light, spring, peace, joy)
  • 300-399 posts: Thor (God of thunder)
  • 400-499 posts: Valhall (Were the Souls killed in Battle arrive)
  • 500-699 posts: Odin (Head of Aesir)
  • 700 + posts: Wodan (Creator of World)

Viewing Other’s Profiles
You can look at anyone else's profile by simply clicking their user name.

Editing Your Signature
Directly under the profile link is a link to Edit Signature. A signature is text that appears at the bottom of each message you post. Type in whatever you wish to use as a signature (up to 100 characters) and click the Update my signature button. You can use Bulletin Board (BB) Code in your signature, or for any of your posts. This allows you to change colors of text and give it different effects. BB Code is explained in more detail in another post.

Adding an Avatar
An avatar is a picture that appears next to your user name in posts. To upload an avatar, choose one of three options:

1) A pre-installed avatar. Simply click the one you want and choose Add this avatar to my profile.
2) A picture from another site. Enter the web address and click Add....
3) A picture on your hard drive. Click Browse or enter the picture name, and enter the picture dimensions. Please note that there is a maximum dimension for avatars, which is currently 150 × 150 pixels. Avatars also have a maximum size of 25k. The board will auto-scale your images, so you don’t have to worry if it’s too big.

You may also choose to remove your avatar by clicking the last option button, “Remove Avatar”.

Now your profile is complete!

Changing Your Time Zone
One thing you will want to do is to change the Time Zone that is displayed on the board as you see it. Otherwise, the posts will all look like they were written at strange times. Here’s how you do it: In your Control Panel, click on the Board Settings link which is down near the bottom on the left hand side. Now just select the time zone from the drop down menu, and adjust for daylight savings time if needed.

Personal Messages (PMs)
You can PM any user by clicking the button next to one of their posts. A personal message travels to the other user instantly; the next time they log in they will see their new message. You can use this as an alternative to e-mail. To see if you have new messages, simply look at the top right of the screen; next to the My Controls link you will see a link that says Inbox(N), where N is the number of new messages you have. To write a new message, you can click on the Inbox then click Compose New Message.

Posting on the Bulletin Board
To post in any forum which is available to you, simply click the forum link and then click the “New Topic” button.
To reply to an existing post, make sure you are currently reading that post and click the “Add Reply” button.
To quote another's post in your reply, click the “Quote” button
To edit your own post, just click the “Edit” button.

Online Users List
On the main page, scroll to the bottom of the page. You will find a list of all currently online users next to the icon along with their color coding. The color codes are different based on the role that person has in The4Horsemen.
